Krivoy Rog Commemorates the Holocaust
19.04.2010, Community Life The Jewish community of Krivoy Rog held a gathering to commemorate the Holocaust and the heroism of European Jewry. The ceremony took place near a monument erected at the site of the mass executions of Jews of Krivoy Rog in the autumn of 1941.
Tatiana Kutz, the director of the Krivoy Rog Ohr Avner Fund, opened the program. She told the audience about the events that occurred in this region in 1941. Her remarks were followed by a poetry reading on this subject by Felix Mamut. Stories were then shared by participants which depicted the heroism of local Jews.
Naum Strashun spoke about the activities of Jewish partisans during the war. Gennady Shufotinsky, the head of the Jewish Youth Club under the auspices of the Jewish Agency, urged young Jews to hold this in their memory so as to prevent such a similar tragedy from ever happening again.
The program ended with the lighting of candles and a moment of silence in memory of the murdered Jews. After the ceremony, participants laid stones at the foot of the monument, in following with Jewish tradition.
