IDF: Palestinian killed near West Bank settlement was Islamic Jihad terrorist
21.01.2011, Israel A Palestinian shot and killed by Israel Defense Forces soldiers near the settlement of Mevo Dotan earlier this week was a member of the Islamic Jihad terrorist group, military sources said on Friday.
On Tuesday, IDF forces shot and killed a Palestinian man at an army post near the in the northern West Bank, after he had reportedly opened fire at the soldiers.
No IDF soldiers were wounded in the operation.
On Friday, military sources identified the Palestinian as Salem Mohammad Sami Samoudi, who they called a "recognized Islamic Jihad operative," saying he had "been arrested by the IDF twice in the past for his involvement in terrorist activities."
The sources also indicated that a Palestinian killed two weeks ago after a failed stabbing attempt at the Bekaot checkpoint in the Jordan valley was also a member of Islamic Jihad, identifying him as Khaldoun Majed Ahmed Samoudi.
"In recent years, there has been a decrease in the organization's activity in the area as, this is a result of security forces' efforts against their terror infrastructure," IDF sources said, indicating that the organization had "not executed a major terror attack since 2006."
Two days ago, IDF soldiers opened fire on two Palestinians approaching the border fence between Israel and the Gaza Strip.
One of the Palestinians was apparently wounded by a shell fired by an IDF tank.
The IDF said that the Palestinians were attempting to plant an explosive device near the border fence.
