Peres says Israel's nuclear silence keeps foes guessing
28.12.2011, Israel Israeli President Shimon Peres lauded Israel’s nuclear ambiguity Sunday, claiming international uncertainty about the Jewish State’s capabilities will serve as a deterrent to Iran.
At a Jerusalem conference of 160 Israeli ambassadors from around the world, Peres said, "Israel has 'real or fictitious' capabilities that could deter Iran.”
Peres used the example of Israel’s nuclear reactor at Dimona. “No one knows what exactly is in Dimona,” Peres explained, “but I have to say that the suspicions of Middle Eastern countries about what is there aide Israel's deterrence.”
"Israel was smart enough to maintain its policy of ambiguity throughout all these years," he said. Though “Israel has answers on the Iranian issue,” the President allowed, “the whole world must deal with it—it cannot become an Israeli monopoly.”
While Iran’s nuclear progression is dangerous, "it is still no reason for us to get hysterical."
"Israel has been in worse positions," Peres said, citing the improbable victory of the War of Independence as one example.
