The Hungarian foreign ministry has condemned comments made by Jobbik MP Marton Gyongyosi, in which he questioned the number of Hungarian Holocaust victims and compared Israel to a Nazi system.
The comments first appeared in an article written in the London's Jewish Chronicle, the Hungarian MTI news agency reported.
Gyongyosi , who is Jobbik’s foreign affairs spokesman, questioned if more than 400,000 Hungarian Jews were really murdered or deported during the Holocaust, and said that it has become a political business to elevate the numbers.
He said that Israel’s treatment of the Palestinians is a "Nazi system" and compared Israeli Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman to Joseph Goebbels.
"The Jews don’t have the right to talk about what happened in the Second World War," he said.
He also declared that Jobbik, an extreme-right party, supported Iran, and called successful Israeli businesses in Hungary a threat and "expansionism."
"Jews are looking to build outside of Israel. There is a kind of expansionism in their behavior," he said.
The opposition Socialists welcome that both the foreign ministry and the co-ruling Christian Democrats of Prime Minister Viktor Orban have dissociated themselves from the comments.
Jobbik has 47 seats in the 386-seat Hungarian parliament.
