Police indicted the nine suspects connected with the near-deadly beating of an Arab teenager two weeks ago in downtown Jerusalem on Tuesday in the Jerusalem District Court.
The suspects were indicted on charges of assault and battery, racial incitement and inciting violence.
Eight of the suspects are minors, and two of those are girls. The only adult is 19-year-old Shimon Siman Tov, a Jerusalem resident. According to the indictment against Siman Tov, around 60 youth sat in Cat Square on Thursday night, August 16, and started harassing Arab youths in the area, telling them they could not sit in the same square. The Jewish youths also chanted “Muhammed is dead!” and “Death to Arabs.”
Around 11:30 pm, around 30 people in the group moved towards Zion Square, with the goal of “beating up Arabs,” according to the indictment. The group saw one Arab pass by who they did not know and attempted to catch him but he was able to run away. A few minutes later, another group of four Arabs passed by and the group started attacking them. The group of Arabs attempted to flee from the area, but 17-year-old Jamal Julani fell as he was running and was immediately surrounded by the group of Jewish teenagers. The teenagers beat Julani unconscious, though his life was later saved by paramedics who arrived on the scene.
They used CPR and defibrillators for more than 10 minutes before his pulse returned and evacuated him in critical but stable condition to Hadassah University Medical Center in Jerusalem’s Ein Kerem, where Julani is still recuperating.
Eight suspects are in the District Court and one suspect is in the Magistrate Court. Police are requesting that all of the suspects be remanded until the end of court proceedings. Eight of the suspects are currently in custody, though one of the girls was released to house arrest.
“There are still details that will clear my brother of guilt,” a brother of one of the minors said outside the courtroom on Tuesday. By MELANIE LIDMAN
