                  Smolensk celebrates historical inaugurations

                  The city of Smolensk, Russia experienced this week the historic inaugurations of its new JCC “‘Beit Malkin” and new Synagogue “Beit Menachem”. The new Synagogue is strategically located alongside the historic Kremlin wall which dates 400 years back.
                  Many distinguished officials from the local government, including the governor of the Smolensk region, Mr. Alaxei Astrovsky and the mayor of the city, Mr. Nikolei Alashaiv participated alongside hundreds of community members, in the inauguration events of the new JCC and synagogue under the direction of the city’s Rabbi Levi Yitzchak and Chana Mondshine.
                  The historical event commenced with a ribbon cutting ceremony, while immediately afterwards the attendees were ushered in to the main sanctuary for the inauguration of the Synagogue.
                  World renowned Cantor Baumgartner led the services accompanied by the world class musicians’ violinist Daniel Ahaviel and Gershon Feurstat on the keyboard. The event reached its climax of as the Torah scrolls were brought into their new home amidst music, singing, dancing and incredible joy.
                  Following the indoor ceremony the crowds of people were treated to a full line up of entertainment and a lavish buffet on the lawn of the new community center. Among the performers was the famous Jewish singer and entertainer Yefim Alexsandrav.
