Wounded Derbent rabbi discharged from Israeli hospital
12.08.2013, Anti-Semitism Derbent Rabbi Ovadya Isakov, who was seriously injured by an unidentified gunman at the end of July, has been discharged from a hospital in the Israeli town of Petah Tikva and will continue his recovery at home, the Federation of Jewish Communities of Russia told Interfax-Religion on Wednesday.
“Rabbi Isakov’s friends and loved ones consider his rapid recovery a true miracle,” a federation spokesperson said.
The rabbi’s full recovery will take a good deal of time, “but his strong character, a warm family atmosphere and the desire to return to his duties as the rabbi of Derbent’s Jewish community are believed to have a positive impact on his recovery,” he said.
The Isakov family decided to stay for some time in Safed, a city in northern Israel.
It was reported earlier that an unidentified gunman shot at Isakov when he came out of his car and walked toward his home at about 1:00 a.m. on July 25. The rabbi suffered a penetrating gunshot wound to his chest and was hospitalized in critical condition.
The shooter fled from the scene.
