The European Jewish Association and the European Jewish communities it represents organizes Tuesday a memorial ceremony in honour of the two victims of the recent terror attacks in Copenhagen, in the presence of Danish ambassador to the EU, Jeppe Tranholm-Mikkelsen.
Last month, an Islamist terrorist killed a filmmaker at a cultural center in Copenhagen and later a Jewish man guarding the city’s main synagogue.
The ceremony will be held at the European Jewish Building in Brussels.
Tuesday will mark the end of the traditional ''Shloshim''or 30-day period of mourning in the Jewish faith. The Jewish tradition prescribes a thirty day period of mourning for relatives and loved ones, during which we abstain from attending normal social gatherings. Following the end of this 30-day period, it is customary to gather together in solidarity, to offer support, recite prayers and do good deeds in the merit of the soul of the deceased, which in turn helps the mourner adapt back o his normal routine.
‘’Participation in this memorial ceremony would demonstrate invaluable solidarity with the families of the two victims of these attacks, as well as Danish society, European Jewry and the European community as a whole,’’ the EJA said.
‘’In addition, it would send the message to those elements in society seeking to undermine the values of freedom, democracy, peaceful co-existence and respect for religious minorities that Europe promotes, that we will continue to stand united in support of these fundamental rights.’’
