'Anti-Semitism is a core tenet of Islamic extremist ideology'
19.11.2015, Anti-Semitism “Anti-Semitism is a core tenet of Islamic extremist ideology, so attacks on Jews by ISIS sympathizers should come as no surprise,” said Jonathan A. Greenblatt, CEO of the Anti-Defamation League (ADL) in a reaction to the stabbing of a Jewish man, teacher in a Jewish school, Wednesday night in the French city of Marseille.
An act which French authorities are describing as having been motivated by anti-Semitism and perhaps inspired by the recent terrorist ISIS attacks in Paris.
According to French police, three men approached on two motorcycles and asked the man if he was Jewish, and proceeded to stab him while shouting anti-Semitic slurs.
One man wore a t-shirt with ISIS symbols, and another showed the victim a photo of Mohamed Merah on his cell phone. Merah, who claimed affiliation with al-Qaeda, murdered three Jewish children and a rabbi at the Ozar Hatorah Jewish school in Toulouse in 2012.
The 57-year-old victim, who was wearing a kippa, was attacked AT about 8pm outside his home, a short distance from the school and synagogue Yavne complex.
The teacher, who escaped serious injury, was taken to hospital as officers searched for the attackers.
“Attacks on French Jews have been paired with attacks on France as a whole several times. Merah killed French soldiers and then attacked a Jewish school. In January, Charlie Hebdo and Hyper Cacher were attacked. Following Friday’s horrific attacks in Paris by ISIS, the French Jewish community has been on high alert, and we are alarmed and saddened by this stabbing,” said Jonathan Greenblatt.
ADL has documented calls by ISIS encouraging and inciting violence against Jews in Israel.
ADL’s report titled ''Anti-Semitism: A Pillar of Islamic Extremist Ideology'' examines the centrality of anti-Jewish hatred to ISIS, Al-Qaeda and other Islamic extremist groups.
