90 bomb threats called into Jewish institutions in the US since the start of 2017
28.02.2017, Anti-Semitism Following a new wave of bomb threats to Jewish Community Centers (JCCs) and day schools in several US states, the Anti-Defamation League (ADL) issued a security advisory to Jewish institutions across the country.
The latest round of threats, the fifth called into JCCs in recent weeks, has struck at least 12 states, including Alabama, Delaware, Florida, Indiana, Maryland, Michigan, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island and Virginia.
ADL tallied at least 20 threats on a single day and approximately 90 bomb threats to Jewish institutions since the beginning of 2017.
“While this latest round of bomb threats to Jewish Community Centers and day schools across the country again appears to not be credible, we are nonetheless urging all Jewish institutions to review their procedures,” said Jonathan A. Greenblatt, ADL CEO.
ADL takes the situation seriously and said it will continue to work intimately with federal and local law enforcement, as well as with community partners across the country.
“Unfortunately, bomb threats are not the only manifestation of anti-Semitism in recent weeks as we have seen Jewish cemetery desecrations strike St. Louis and Philadelphia,” Greenblatt said.
At a White House press briefing, press secretary Sean Spicer emphasized that President Donald Trump is “deeply disappointed and concerned” by the ongoing upsurge in anti-Semitism across the US.
“The president continues to condemn these and any other form of anti-Semitic and hateful acts in the strongest terms,” Spicer said. “No one in America should feel afraid to follow the religion of their choosing freely and openly. The president is dedicated to preserving this originating principle of our nation, he added.
