As Israel is to mark the country 69th anniversary, its population has risen to nearly 8.7 million
03.05.2017, Israel On the eve of Israel’s Yom Haatzmaut or Independence Day, the country 69th anniversary, its population has risen to nearly 8.7 million, according to the data released by the Israel Central Bureau of Statistics (CBS).
Over the past 69 years, Israel’s population has multiplied by 10.
When Israel was established in 1948, there were only 806,000 Israeli citizens. At the time, the global Jewish population was 11.5 million, and just 6% were in Israel. The Jewish population in the world is today close to 14.4 million and 43% of them live in Israel.
According to CBS, Israel’s population is expected to reach 15.2 million by the country’s 100th Independence Day (in 2048).
Today, out of the 8.68 million Israelis, almost 6.5 million (74.7%) are Jewish. The Arab population stands at 1.8 million (almost 21%) and 388,000 Israeli citizens are non-Arab Christians and people who belong to other religions.
Over the past 12 months some 174,000 babies were born, 44,000 people died and 30,000 new immigrants arrived in the country.
The CBS report also revealed some interesting details about the citizens of Israel: three-quarters of the Jewish population in Israel were born in the country.
Yom Haatzmaut, the Independence Day, begins with celebrations on Monday night, as the country transitions from Memorial Day — 24 hours of mourning for its fallen soldiers and terror victims.
