The International Jewish Newspaper has a long-standing tradition of naming a Person of the Year and an IJN laureate, based on letters sent by our readers.
In the 15th anniversary of the International Jewish Newspaper, the oldest among Russian-language Jewish newspapers in modern times, we received the follow nominations for Person of the Year, 2003
1. Yuri Luzhkov, Moscow mayor, for creating unique conditions for nurturing multinational cultures in Moscow, the capital of Russia.
2. Alexander Machkevich, President of the Euro-Asian Jewish Congress, for his active international activity and the development of a dialogue between different nations and faiths.
This year’s honorary title IJN laureate has been awarded to the following nominees:
For reviving Judaism in Russia - Berl Lazar, Chief Rabbi of Russia (FJCR), and Adolf Shaevich, Chief Rabbi of Russia (CJROUR).
For literary ctivity - Leonid Zhukhovitsky, writer, publicist and dramatist.
For long-term philanthropic work, promoting scientific research and cultural activities within Jewish organizations - Leonid Nevzlin, businessman, deputy-president of Open Russia’s board.
For activity directed at protection of journalists’ rights and free press in Russia - Alexey Simonov, journalist.
For long-term work in the Jewish press - Larissa Tokar, journalist.
For monographic-historical research "Together or Apart?" (M.: Publishing house "Zakharov", 2003) - Semen Reznik, writer, historian and journalist.
For his contribution to Russian musical culture - Andrey Makarevich, composer, poet and performer.
