The Conference of Organization on Safety and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) on anti-Semitism has begun its work.
The Forum in Berlin has been called with the intent of sharing experiences and developing strategic directions in the struggle against new forms of anti-Jewish propaganda, the level of which has increased significantly in Europe for the last few years. Johannes Rau, President of Germany, and Solomon Passi, Foreign Minister of Bulgaria and OSCE Chairman-In-Office, delivered the opening statements.
Government officials and parliamentarians from the other OSCE member-countries arrived to Berlin also, including Ella Pamfilova, Chairperson of the Commission on Human Rights under the President of the Russian Federation. Traditionally, alongside government officials, leaders of civic society organizations have been key participants in the OSCE’s conferences. Before the opening, Mikhail Chlenov, the EAJC General Secretary, and leader of the Vaad of Russia, had a meeting with Ella Pamfilova with the purpose to develop a dialogue with the state authorities of the region.
Alexander Machkevich, President of the Euro-Asian Jewish Congress (EAJC), and well-known businessman from Kazakhstan, headed the United delegation of Jewish organizations and communities from the CIS, Bulgaria and Asia-Pacific region.
At the reception for the leaders of the delegations, Alexander Machkevich reported on the results of an anti-Semitism monitoring program, which the Congress carried out, and pointed out anti-Israeli aspects of the anti-Semitic propaganda. "As an organization operating on 2 continents, we can fully counteract anti-Semitism in all regions of our responsibility, but I am certain, that it is necessary to act globally,” – the EAJC leader said. In this connection, independent experts note, that Machkevich’s intention of global efforts to counteract anti-Semitism, can turn the EAJC into a priority partner of the OSCE.
