EAJC General Council Meeting.

The Euro-Asian Jewish Congress (EAJC) General Council meeting was held in the capital of Kazakhstan – Astana city – on September 8, 2004. Astana meeting was dedicated to the official opening of a synagogue, which construction was fully sponsored by the EAJC. The synagogue opened on the previous day became the biggest one in the Central Asia.
EAJC President Alexander Machkevitch, EAJC Executive Vice-President Fedor Ossinin, EAJC Secretary General Michael Chlenov, EAJC General Council Chairman Josef Zissels, other General Council members – leaders of Jewish communities and international Jewish organizations, which are part of the EAJC – as well as members of EAJC Council of Rabbis took part in the meeting.
Moreover, there were specially invited to participate the meeting Chief Rabbi of Israel Yona Metzger, representative plenipotentiary of the Jewish Agency for Israel (JAFI) Chaim Chesler, leaders of Jewish communities of Estonia, Lithuania, Poland, Turkey, etc.
Josef Zissels presided over the EAJC General Council meeting. It was opened with Alexander Machkevitch’s salutary address dedicated to EAJC major achievements in the current year. Michael Chlenov presented a detailed report on EAJC international initiatives.
Then General Council members shared annual results of the activities of the communities they head as well as spoke about the situation in the countries they represent. There were the reports of the Direction of EAJC programs, Congress working plan for the year 2005 as well as a number of other issues discussed.
Participants of the meeting honored the memory of the victims of the terrorist act in the Russian city of Beslan.
