The Euro-Asian Jewish Congress (EAJC) delegation took part in ceremonies commemorating the 60th anniversary of the Auschwitz-Birkenau Nazi death camp liberation by the Soviet Army, on January 26-27, 2005.
The delegation included EAJC President Alexander Machkevitch, EAJC Vice-President Vyacheslav Kantor, EAJC Secretary General Michael Chlenov, EAJC General Council Chairman Joseph Zissels, EAJC General Council and Council of Rabbis members, etc.
Many national and government leaders attended commemoration ceremonies in Krakow and Auschwitz-Birkenau, with President of Israel Moshe Katsav, President of Poland Aleksander Kwasniewski, President of Russia Vladimir Putin, President of Ukraine Viktor Yuschenko, President of Bulgaria Georgi Parvanov, Queen Beatrix of the Netherlands, US Vice-President Richard Cheney, Deputy Senate Chairman of the Kazakhstan Parliament Omirbek Baigeldy, Nobel Peace Prize Laureate Elie Wiesel and many others among them.
M. Katsav, A. Machkevitch and V. Kantor who also heads the Organizational Committee of the Memorial Forum “Let My People Live!” delivered their speeches to leaders of Jewish organizations, diplomats and journalists during the reception held by the Organizational Committee.
In their speeches during the official opening of the Forum “Let My People Live!” national leaders defined their common position regarding the events that took place 60 years ago, anti-Semitic manifestations in the contemporary world and approved Forum organizers’ initiative to conduct systematic educational work to preserve the memory of Holocaust and its lessons.
Commemoration ceremonies culminated in speeches delivered by Presidents of Poland, Russia, Israel and former prisoners at the Birkenau death camp site and solemn lighting the candles in memory of Auschwitz victims and its liberators. 40 world leaders participated in the ceremony.
The commemoration was conducted on the high level, thus, turning the 60th anniversary of the Auschwitz-Birkenau Nazi death camp liberation and the establishing of the Forum “Let My People Live!” into events of a truly global scale.
