16.08.2005 EAJC IN MEDIA DIGEST, JULY 2005
Federal President of Austria Heinz Fischer and President of Ukraine Viktor Yushchenko met with the Euro-Asian Jewish Congress (EAJC) President Alexander Machkevitch in Vienna.
The following issues have been discussed during the trilateral talks: state and society in the "Old" and "New" Europe countries, liberty of conscience and the minorities in the region.
"It is not by chance that the talks were held in Vienna. In due time Austrians, Ukrainians and Jews together with Hungarian-Finnish, Roman, and Turkic nations of the Habsburg Monarchy had developed a unique pattern of Central European tolerance, that has become a model for many countries of the continent", - noted EAJC President, - "Today, when the conditions of EU and Eurasian region development process are challenging, the interest to the cumulated experience has awaken on the interstate level".
A. Machkevitch suggested that Austrian and Ukrainian leaders join the international inter-religious dialogue under the patronage of Noursultan Nazarbayev, President of Kazakhstan.
"Euro-Asia - from Lviv to Tokyo and from Vienna to Jerusalem - has to become aware of its integrity and unity that should serve as barrier to such barbarity as terror acts in London and Israeli town of Netanya", - emphasized the EAJC leader, - "Kazakhstan initiative helped reduce the tension in Central Asia. This created a perspective basis for the dialogue with other Euro-Asian countries, directions of which have been discussed".
