A continental part of the World Jewish Congress (WJC), EAJC consists of Jewish communities from all CIS countries, from Australia, Bulgaria, India, Macedonia, Mongolia, New Zealand, Slovenia, and Japan, as well as of a number of Jewish international organizations, among which World Congress of Mountain Jews, World Congress of Georgian Jews, etc.
EAJC president Alexandru Mashkevich, leader of the Kazakhstan Jews, noted in his speech that this is the first time when Moldova is hosting such an important Jewish forum. “We – Jews from three continents - have come to Chisinau to express our gratitude to the people of Moldova for supporting its Jewish Diaspora”, underlined Mr. Mashkevich.
Mr. Mashkevich added that he regards this visit as a continuation of his meeting with Vladimir Voronin, President of the Republic of Moldova, from June. “We find the multinational unity in Moldova, the attitude of the President and of the Government very obliging”, declared Mashkevich.
On her behalf, Olga Gonciarova, manager general of the Interethnic Relations Department under the Moldovan Government, highly appreciated the organization of the forum. “The meeting of EAJC General Council is important not only for the Jewish community, but also for our country. This is a kind of a circle of trust granted to Moldova. This is the recognition of our country’s success as an independent country,” Ms. Gonciarova added.
The members of the forum touched upon various aspects of the Jews’ life in Moldova. The leadership of the Association of Jewish Organizations and Communities in Moldova and of the Jewish Congress of Moldova also delivered speeches. Mr. Ben Ami, Consul of Israel to Moldova and to Ukraine, has given a detailed description of his activity in Moldova.
EAJC officials have also mentioned the brilliant activity of architect Simeon Shoihet, who has been the chairman of the Jewish community in Moldova for many years. Mr. Mashkevich handed him an order and a special EAJC diploma “For great contribution to the development of the Jewish culture and enforcement of understanding between peoples”.
At the end of the meeting, members of the EAJC General Council took part in the opening festivity of the Jewish center “Kedem” in Chisinau.
