New Synagogue Will Be Built In Dushanbe, Tajikistan.
20.05.2006
Tajikistan President Emomali Rakhmonov received Euro-Asian Jewish Congress (EAJC) President Alexander Machkevitch in Dushanbe, the capital of Tajikistan. During the meeting they discussed business and humanitarian co-operation.
Special attention was paid to the issue concerning the only synagogue in Tajikistan. According to many scandalous publications, it was decided to take down the above-mentioned synagogue without providing the Jewish community with another equal premise. Different organization including EAJC actively protested against such decision.
"Today we have completely settled all misunderstanding," - Machkevitch said to journalists, - "President Rakhmonov has assured me, that he will provide the most appropriate plot of land in the centre of Dushanbe so that the elderly members of the community do not suffer while getting to outlying districts. EAJC together with Tajik sponsors will completely cover all the expenses connected with a new Jewish house building."
EAJC President has mentioned a significant contribution made by President Rakhmonov to consolidation of interethnic and inter-religious peace in Tajikistan. "Under the President Rakhmonov direction, the country has managed to come out of a bloody conflict, and now demonstrates stability and develops the atmosphere of tolerance in this not simple region of the world", - Machkevitch emphasized.
He also expressed confidence that in new conditions, the Jewish Community of Tajikistan would take more active part in the international inter-confessional dialogue, which is supported by EAJC.
"I hope that the new Dushanbe synagogue "Beit Rachel", which I dedicate to my mother's memory, shall be a capable centre of the Jewish community of Tajikistan humanitarian initiatives, which participation in the EAJC makes us really proud", - concluded the Jewish leader of Euro-Asia.
