Euro-Asian Jewish Congress (EAJC) has gathered the General Assembly, the superior body of this major continental branch of the World Jewish Congress (WJC), in Jerusalem.
The General Assembly is attended by the delegates of Jewish organizations and communities from the CIS, Eastern Europe, Asia-Pacific, and by EAJC Council of Rabbis members.
During the proceedings, reports on EAJC foreign-policy initiatives and humanitarian programs will be heard and discussions on present state of Jews in the countries presented by the delegates held. Besides, empowerment of EAJC governing body is to be confirmed.
EAJC President Alexander Machkevitch told the journalists: "The resurging Jewish communities of the former Soviet Union as well as the Jewish Diaspora in Asia and Oceania need not only help these days, but coordination of their effort in the international arena. Here we are going to discuss the results of the meetings, which we constantly have with world political, social, and religious leaders".
The EAJC President also conveyed that before the General Assembly was opened, the EAJC leaders visited the Israeli town of Sderot, which has been suffering constant fire from the Gaza Strip. While they were there, another missile attack started, so they had to outwait it in the public bomb shelter.
Machkevitch said, that "It was really painful to see young inhabitants of Sderot suffering, worrying at the each sound of missile exploding. On the spot we decided to do everything to soothe the lives of young Israelis living there. In particular, we will help to organization summer camps in other parts of Israel, so that they can take comfort after fears and worries in present".
Besides issues of organization, the EAJC General Assembly program includes a joint plenum with the Jewish Agency for Israel (JAFI), dedicated to the 40th anniversary of international struggle for the rights of Soviet Jews.
The abovementioned subject, issues of helping Sderot, and Jewish Diaspora participation in the Middle East situation unbiased media coverage were also discussed at the special meeting of EAJC leaders with the Israeli Minister of Foreign Affairs Tzipi Livni, and at the meeting with the Israeli Knesset Committee for Immigration, Absorption, and Diaspora Affairs, headed by the MK Michael Nudelman.
The EAJC President stressed, that "The fact we have gathered our first General Assembly in Jerusalem is a new and a very important sign of our solidarity with the Jewish state. Our support of Israel is being fostered by the uncompromising struggle for the Soviet Jewry, which started here 40 years ago. And we compliment real heroes – Zionist movement leaders, who gave long years of their lives to the freedom for the Jews of the former USSR".
