Member of the US Congress Visits Kazakhstan at the Invitation of the Euro-Asian Jewish Congress.
Member of the US Congress, Rep. Shelley Berkley (D-NV) visited Kazakhstan on an official visit. Berkley met Euro-Asian Jewish Congress (EAJC) and Jewish Congress of Kazakhstan (JCK) President Alexander Machkevitch earlier in Washington, DC, and he had invited the Congresswoman to visit Almaty City, the southern capital of Kazakhstan.
During her visit Rep. Berkley reviewed the process of preparing parliamentary elections, which are set to August 2007 in Kazakhstan, and visited a polling station. She has also met Kazakhstan Secretary of State, former Kazakh Ambassador to US Kanat Saudabayev, representatives of the Assembly of Peoples of Kazakhstan and ethnic-cultural centers. Besides, the American guest visited "Mitzvah" Jewish Ethnic Organizations of Kazakhstan Association and Almaty synagogue, where met with EAJC Council of Rabbis Chairman, Rabbi-in-Chief of Kazakhstan Yeshaya Cohen.
According to national media, Rep. Berkley gave positive assessment of Kazakhstan judiciary system development and legal reforms, and also marked that women became more active in social and political life. Congresswoman stated, that "For the first time in 220 years women confidently claim highest state posts in the United States. Kazakhstan shows same tendencies".
Dr. Machkevitch believes, in his turn, that this visit demonstrates respectable place of Kazakhstan in world community of nations.
