EAJC Leader Honored with High Award.

An honorary "Torch of Liberty" Award was presented to the Euro-Asian Jewish Congress (EAJC) President Alexander Machkevitch on the extended session of the National Conference on Soviet Jewry (NCJS) Board of Directors in Washington. The award is a recognition of AEJC President's role in revival of Jewish life in Eurasia and his participation in international movements for the rights of the Jews from the former USSR.
The award was presented by NCSJ President Edward Robin and Executive Director Mark Levin in the presence of the NJSC Board, leaders of the major Jewish organizations of the USA, and the EAJC delegation.
The same award was presented to Shoshanna Cardin, the former Chairman of the Conference of Presidents of Major American Jewish Organizations (December 2006), Steny Hoyer, the majority leader of the House of Representatives and former Maryland congressman (December 2003), Gordon Smith, Senator for Oregon (April 2001), and Newton Gingrich, former Speaker of the House of Representatives (November 1999).
The gala reception was attended by Ambassadors Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Azerbaijan, Georgia, Kazakhstan, Russian Federation, Uzbekistan, and the Ukraine, Senator Gordon Smith and congressmen Shelley Berkley and Robert Wexler.
The Congresswoman Shelley Berkley organized a gala reception in honor of Alexander Machkevitch, that was attended by 15 US congressmen, Ambassador of Kazakhstan to the USA, and other high-rank persons.
Answering journalists' questions A. Machkevitch stressed that the award he is given in the year of Israel's 60th anniversary doesn't draw a line under the activities of Jewish organizations that he runs, but gives an additional impulse for further constructive activities.
