Opening of Chernovtsy Museum of Jewish Life in Bukovina.

The opening of an exposition of Chernovtsy Museum of Jewish Life in Bukovina was held in Chernovtsy as a part of the Week of Jewish life and culture.
The museum is dedicated to an amazing but scantily explored phenomenon of the Bukovina Jewry from the late XVIII to the 40-s of the XX century.
The Euro-Asian Jewish Congress (EAJC) General Council Chairman Joseph Zissels, who was the initiator and chief mastermind both of the Week and the museum, said at the opening: "The goal and the task of our museum is to provide information on history of the Jews of Bukovina and education to our society. We strove to save the history of the Jewish population of Bukovina up to 1941, demonstrate its main phases, recreate the atmosphere and spirit of those times."
According to the project, which was supervised by the director of the museum Natalia Shevchenko, the exposition occupies 12 boards dedicated to the tradition, folk art, history, religion, culture, and social life of the Jews of Bukovina.
History of the Jews of Bukovina counts approximately 500 years. This period includes the life of the community in the largest empires of Turkey and Austria, in the Kingdom of Romania and in the USSR. All that was reflected in Jewish culture and life, as they were influenced by the culture of the people among whom they lived.
Official opening of the Museum of Jewish Life in Bukovina is planned for October 2008. It will be timed to the celebrations of Chernovtsy 600 anniversary.
