President of Azerbaijan Sends Hannukah Greetings to Jews of Eurasia
11.12.2009 On the 11th of December, the President of the Euro-Asian Jewish Congress (EAJC) visited Baku with a working visit.
The main event of the visit was the meeting between the EAJC leader and the President of Azerbaikan Ilham Alieyv. Various business and humanitarian questions related to the activity of the Congress and its leader in Azerbaijan were discussed at the meeting. The talks also touched upon the subject of developing and widening interfaith dialogue, which is one of the main programs of the EAJC. The EAJC President also touched upon important questions from the life of the Jewish community of Azerbaijan, which is a member of the Euro-Asian Jewish Congress, and thanked the Azerbaijan leader for his consecutive policy for countering anti-Semitism and strengthening international concordance in the country.
The Azerbaijan President, in turn, congratulated Alexander Mashkevich, and, through him, the Jews of Eurasia, on the upcoming holiday of Hannukah. The EAJC President spoke about this at the meeting with the Jewish community of Azerbaijan, led by the head of the community, EAJC General Council member Gennadiy Zelmanovich.
This is not the first meeting between Alexander Mashkevich and the Azerbaijan leader. In particular, the EAJC President and Ilham Aliyev met in 2006 during a visit to Baku of the joint diplomatic mission of the EAJC and the Conference of Presidents of Major American Jewish Organizations.
