25.12.2009
The delegation of the leadership of the Euro-Asian Jewish Congress (EAJC), led by EAJC General Council Chairman Josed Zisels has made a working visit to the Novoselitsa city of the Chernovitsky region of Ukraine. This trip was dictated by the necessity to care for frescos that are over 100 years old, and which were recently discovered in an abandoned local synagogue.
As part of the trip, a meeting with the Mayor of Novoselitsa, Maria Nickorich, took place. At the meeting, the question of preserving the frescos as a museum was raised. Various details related to the preservation of the unique object of the Jewish historic and cultural heritage were discussed in detail: legal, those of an art expertise, organizational, technological, and financial.
According to Mayor Nickorich, the question of preservation of the Jewish synagogue frescoes will be placed into agenda of the city authorities after the 17th of January, as only the elections will decide who will be in the local and central committees that will be undertaking this project.
Josef Zisels expressed his sureness at a press conference that the frescoes of the Novoselitsky synagogue are not the last find that will enrich the Jewish cultural treasury of Ukraine. “And I hope that this will become an asset not only for the Jews, but for everyone,” the EAJC General Council leader underscored.
