EAJC Statement on Tver Terrorist Attack

                  21.06.2010

The Euro-Asian Jewish Congress (EAJC) has recieved the news of the terroristic attack that commenced in the early hours of June 21st near the Tver synagogue with indignation and alarm.
Despite the fact that no one was hurt because of the explosion, it was an obvious act of intimidation. The only synagogue in the city, only returned to the believers in 2002 and restored in 2004, has been significantly damaged.
The terroristic act became yet another certain step of the extremists which have recently desecrated the walls of the synagogue with anti-Semitic slogans and spread Judaeophobic fliers in the city. Last year, over 140 Jewish headstones were desecrated at the Dmytrovo-Cherkasy city cemetary. All of these crimes remained unsolved, and their perpetrators and organizators went free.
The EAJC is certain that in multinational Russia such crimes must not be qualified as mere "vandalism" or "hooliganism." Such villainy must be given serious political assessment and become objects of responsible community debate.
We truly hope that this time the authorities take all required action to apprehend the criminals. Terrorism can have no human justification and must have no political perspective.
We are certain that the synagogue shall be restored and become a part of the cultural landscape pf Tver. The EAJC, as other Jewish organizations and funds, is ready to provide the necessary aid for this task.
