                  Alexander Mashkevich Speaks on Congress Initiatives

                  Euro-Asian Jewish Congress (EAJC) President Alexander Mashkevich spoke about EAJC foreign policy initiatives during the EAJC General Council session, which is taking place in Kiev.
                  In his speech, the Congress President elaborated on events planned for the nearest future and initiated by the EAJC and the EAJC President personally. Among the most resonant initatives is one to conduct a meeting of Jewish community leaders from Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) member countries as part of the OSCE summit in Astana.The second important event planned for 2010 is to hold the 4th Brussels Conference in support of Israel, the initiative for which was put forward by a number of veterans of the Soviet period independent Jewish movement and the acting leaders of Euro-Asian Jewish Congress.

Alexander Mashkevich moderated the "Jewish World" section of the Herzliya Conference, which can be seen as acknowledgement of his role in the world's Jewish Diaspora. The EAJC President also spoke about plans to reconstruct the historical Uman city synagogue connected to the Hasid tsaddik rabbi Nachman, founder of the Bratslav Hasidim movement.
                  The General Council also approved the Congress Vice Presidents put forward for this during the period after the previous General Council session. Michael Mirilashvili (Israel) was approved as the first EAJC Vice President. Also appointed to Vice President posts were: Merab Elashvili (Russia), Boris Litovsky (Ukraine), Gabriel Mirilashvili (Israel), and Emmanuel Greenshpun (Moldova).
                  Leaders of Jewish communities from all over the Soviet Union, as well as Eastern European and Asian-Pacific countries, have gathered in Kiev to participate in the EAJC General Council session. The September 6 session meeting was dedicated to reports from Jewish community leaders who gathered from a huge region, from Bulgaria to Japan, about the situations in their respective countries.
