EAJC Supports Moscow Jewish Exhibition
01.12.2010 The exposition "Jews in Moscow: History, Culture, Traditions," which was partly organized by the Euro-Asian Jewish Congress (EAJC), has opened in Moscow on November 30th.
The exposition has three sections: materials dedicated to the history of the Jews from the Xvth to the middle of the 1920's; works of art by famous Moscow Jews; and posters and leaflets from Jewish museums from different cities. There are over 300 exhibit items in the different stange, including community documents, portraits and autorgraphs of famous community activists, advertising posters of different Jewish events (lectures, exhibitions, concerts), bond papers, logotypes, ad flyers and original packing from products from Jewish-owned businesses.
During the opening of the exhibition, its organizator, the enthusiastic collector Ephim Ulitsky said that the first step towards this exhibition was taken in 1993, when a group inspired by the idea to create a Jewish museum in Moscow gathered in the Grand Choral Synagogue of St. Petersburg. He also thanked the leadership of the Moscow Museum, who provided the space for the exhibition, and allowed the organizators "to learn about museum work first-hand" during their preparation for the exhibition.
Among the speakers at the opening ceremony were: Head Rabbi of Russia, EAJC Rabbi Council Deputy Chairman Adolph Shaevich, representative of the Moscow administration Konstantin Blazhenov, head of the Moscow JAFI department Alik Nadan, and the President of the Russian Jewish Congress Yuri Kanner.
EAJC Secretary General, Professor Michael Chlenov noted the necessity and importance of the existence of a Jewish museum both for the Jews of Moscow and for Moscow in general, and noted that the exposition could be the seed of a future permanent museum.
