Semen Shoihet Necrologue

It is with great grief and a feeling of deep loss that the Euro-Asian Jewish Congress (EAJC) learned of the death of the Distinguished Architect of the Republic of Moldova, the long-term leader of the Moldavian Jewish community, EAJC General Council Member Semen Mikhailovich Shoihet. Semen Mikhailovich passed away in his 79th year in Germany after a long and severe illness.

Semen Shohet was the head architect of the "Urbanproject" Institute for a number of years. He was author of the master plan for the Chisinau and Balti disticts, and for the cities of Bender, Dubasari, Cahul, Rybnitsa, Tiraspol, and other Moldavian cities.

A number of buldings of his design d were built in Chisinau, including the Publishing House, circus, the Railwayman's Palace, the National Bank, and the Palaces of Culture in Bendery, Orhei, and Streshen.

Semen Shoihet is the author of many memorials to important Moldavian historic figures, and also of memorials to victims of Fascism in many cities and towns of the Moldavian republic.

For many years Semen Shoihet was the leader of the Jewish community of the Republic of Moldova, and the member of the Presidental Council of the Republic. He was awarded many medals and certificates of honor, as well as the state awards "Gloria Muncii" and "Ordin de Onoare." In 2005, he was given the special EAJC award and certificate "For an expectional contribution to the development of Jewish cultural and community life, and activity in strengthening understanding between peoples."

The EAJC offers condolences to the family and friends of the deceased.
