Jewish Children's Camp “Shorashim – Roots and Future of Ukrainian Jews” Has Begun Its Work
16.07.2011 The Jewish historic camp "Shorashim – Roots and Future of Ukrainian Jews" has begun its work of July 4, 2011. "Shorashim-2011" was opened with the support of the Euro-Asian Jewish Congress (General Council Chairman Josef Zisels), the Association of Jewish Organizations and Communities (VAAD) Ukraine, the Jewish Agency For Israel (JAFI), and the Genesis Foundation. 117 children from four countries – Ukraine, Belarus, Moldova, and Israel – are taking part in the Shorashim camp this year. This year, the camp is taking place in the old Ukrainian city of Mulkachevot, at the “Latoritsa” rest home.
The participants and councilors of the camp were greeted by the Director General of the Jewish community of Mukachevo Alla Agafonova. The greetings were then continued by the Director of the Shorashim camp Natalia Bakunina.
The Jewish international camp Shorashim allows children to immerse themselves in the life of a Jewish community in a safe and propitious environment. A child is given the opportunity to grow up and gain personal independence, social skills, and new interests. All of the events at Shorashim are enriched by Jewish values and culture.
In Shorashim children become conscious of their Jewish status and learn to be Jews. After receiving key Jewish knowledge at the campt, the children will value their Jewish heritage higher, and will become active Jewish community members.
