The leaders of the Jewish communities that are a part of the Euro-Asian Jewish Congress (EAJC) continue their efforts to explain the position of the Congress on the upcoming UN vote on the Palestinian membership in the UN. The Jewish communities are turning to the leaders of their countries, calling for them not to support the gamble bein pressed at the UN General Assembly upon the global community by the Palestinian leadership.

On September 14, EAJC General Council member, Chairman of the Jewish community of Armenia Rimma Varjyapetyan (Feller) sent a letter to the President of the Republic of Armenia Serge Sargsyan, Armenian Prime Minister Tigran Sarkisyan, and Minister of Foreign Affairs Edward Nalbandyan. The letter read: "The decision on the unilateral proclamation of a Palestinian state is not just premature, but will make the situation far worse, can have utterly unpredictable consequences […] We believe that our country must do everything within its power, and to use diplomatic channels to convince the Palestinian administration to return to direct peace talks with Israel. We request that you exercise care when speaking the position of our state on this subject and not support the populist decision of the unilateral proclamation of a Palestinian state. We would like to see Armenia among the peacemaker countries, but not in the number of those countries which will be responsible for the aggravation of the conflice.”

The letter of the Armenian Jewish community leader also calls for the administration of the country to “refrain from taking part in the Durban 3 conference, which is in essence anti-Semitic and incites xenophobia.”

That same day, the leaders of the Georgian Jewish community, EAJC General Council members Guram Batiashvili and Elena Berkovich, as well as the Head Rabbi of Georgia Ariel Levin appealed to Georgian President Michael Saakashvili. Their letter reads: “We, Georgian Jews and representatives of the Euro-Asian Jewish Congress state that talks between Israel and the Palestinian leaders, without any additional conditions, must become an alternative to the unilateral proclamation of Palestinian independence. These peace talks are most important in the context of the explosive situation in the Near East. The UN vote for the recognition of Palestine may lead to new bloodshed. This means that those who will vote for recognizing Palestine will be voting for an escalation of violence. Mr. President, we turn to you as our leader and as to a friend of the Jewish people: do not vote for the unilateral proclamation of the Palestinian State at the UN General Assembly session, try to assist the solution of conflicts through negotiations.”
