                  Kyiv Conference on Preserving Memory of Holocaust Victims Report

                  On September 21, the conference “Public Heritage: Understanding of the Holocaust in Ukraine. International Efforts in Education, Study and the Defense of Mass Burials.” The event was initiated by the Ukrainian Jewish Committee (President – People's Deputy of Ukraine Alexander Feldman) and the American Jewish Committee, represented by its International Jewish Affairs Director, OSCE Special Representative on Anti-Semitism rabbi Andrew Baker.

                  The situation in the area of Holocaust studies and the efforts of Jewish communities to preserve and protect the memory about the places of Jewish mass killings during the Holocaust in Ukraine.

                  The Euro-Asian Jewish Congress (EAJC) was represented at the conference by Congress General Council Chairman, VAAD Ukraine Chairman Josef Zisels, EAJC General Council members Dr. Anatoliy Podolsky (Direcotr of the Ukrainian Center for Holocaust Studies), Semen Belman (Chairman of the Chernigiv Jewish community), and Vyacheslav Likhachev. Josef Zisels spoke about the 20 years of experience that VAAD Ukraine has on memorializing mass burials, and of the EAJC programs aimed at educating people about the Holocaust. The EAJC General Council Chairman also spoke in detail on the problems that came up previously because of an incorrect approach to preserving the memory of the dead.
