Kostanay Seder Gathers Over 80 People
12.04.2012 In 2011, the Mitzvah Association of Jewish Organizations of Kazakhstan was given a building for a synagogue in the city of Kostanay. This marked the beginning of the establishment and rapid development of Jewish community life in the city. Today, thanks to the sponsorship of the Euro-Asian Jewish Congress and the work of Mitzvah in Kostanay, there is a thriving and diverse community life for all ages.
The synagogue is a center of Jewish community life not only for Kostanay itself, but for other nearby cities. For example, Jews from Rudniy and Lysakovsk come to the Kostanay synagogue on a regular basis. As the President of the Mitzvah Association, EAJC General Council member Alexander Baron notes, the development of the Jewish community in Kostanay and other cities is one of the highest priority tasks for the organization he is heading.
Jewish Studies seminars are being held as part of the program of informal Jewish education. These seminars gather more and more Jews, who would like to learn not only about the basics of Jewish philosophy and traditions, but to gain a deeper understanding of difficult aspects of the Jewish worldview. The Jewish tradition is not just theorized about – it is practiced, as well. There is a regular community Sabbat in the synagogue, and over 40 people are regular attendants. And this year's Passover seder gathered over eighty people from Kostanay, Lysakovsk, and Rudniy.
