EAJC Representative in Israel Takes Part in Mimouna Celebration
17.04.2012 The Deputy Secretary General of the Euro-Asian Jewish Congress Haim ben Yakov has taken part in the Mimouna celebration. Mimouna is a traditional North African Jewish celebration held the day after Passover, a day for friendship, open doors, and open hearts. The celebration always involves laughter, and treats of sweets and traditional holiday cakes – mofletta. This year's Mimouna celebration in the Ben Gurion city park gathered approximately 20 thousand people! Famous Israeli stars, such as Eyal Golan, a singer in the Mizrahi style, sang at the event.
Mimouna has been becoming ever more popular among Russian-speaking Israelis, just as New Year's and the 8th of March (Women's Day) celebrations are gathering more and more native Israelis to celebrate with the Russian-speaking citizens.
As a notable testament to Israel's cultural diversity, a concert titled “Made in the USSR” and dedicated to Israel's 64th anniversary also took place during the Passover week.
This nostalgic evening to 80s music gathered several thousand spectators at a stadium. Among the stars who sang were Tatyana Ovsienko, who was most popular in the 80s, as well as Israel singers, including Vladi Blaiberg, Anna Reznikova, Igor Kozak, Stella Bobis, and Avi Ventura, The bulk of the evening was made up of hits from the Soviet 80s chart.
