EAJC Representatives Meet With Claims Conference Leaders
23.08.2012 On August 22, a working meeting of the representatives of the Euro-Asian Jewish Congress, led by EAJC Secretary General Michael Chlenov, and the Executive Vice President of the Claims Conference Greg Schneider took place. The EAJC and the International Union of Public Associations of Jews - Former Prisoners of Fascism (MSEBUF), which is a part of the EAJC, both have permanent representation on the Claims Conference Directorate.
Among those who took part in the meeting were: MSEBUF leader Ephim Gologorsky; member of the the Civic Chamber of the Russian Federation, President of the 'Holocaust' Foundation Alla Gerber; Advisor to the EAJC Secretary General Alexei Karpov, Deputy Head of the EAJC PR Department Nikolai Propirniy and MSEBUF member Boris Davidzon.
A number of current matters connected with the material compensations for citizens who were victims of Nazism in the territory in which the EAJC is currently active. In particular, a one-time payment for former USSR refugees from the 100-kilometer immediate battle area and a charity project through the JAFI net of charity centers – 'cheseds' were discussed.
Greg Schneider informed the gathering about the agreement which has been reached with the German authorities, according to which the prison term of former prisoners necessary to be eligible for compensation has been shortened to three months. In response to this, Michael Chlenov and Ephim Gologorsky noted that most ghettos in the occupied territories of the Russian Federation existed less than that term, and stressed the necessity to entirely remove the prison time requirement for compensation.
The question of compensation for the Jewish survivors of Nalchik and Mozdok – so-called 'open ghettos,' traditional Jewish city blocks that had not been surrounded by a wall and departure from which were allowed by the occupational authorities – was also raised for the first time. The representative of the Claims Conference has said for the first time that there people might be eligible for a one-time compensation.
As Michael Chlenov noted after the meeting, “The meeting was certainly beneficial. We were able to temporarily or finally solve some of the long overdue problems, and at the same time we were able to define the directions of activity in which the Euro-Asian Jewish Congress needs to deepen interaction with the Claims Conference to better the life of Jewish victims of Nazism in the region represented by the EAJC.
