Seminar on Basics of Jewish Culture in Kostanay
04.09.2012 A two-day seminar on the basics of Jewish culture, part of the ShoReSH project, has taken place in Kostanai. The participants of the seminar came from several Kazakhstan cities and towns: many were from the Rudniy and Lysakovsk cities, and from two cities further off – Karabalyk and Nauchniy town.
The majority of the seminar participants were Jewish youth: there were around 20 teenagers aged 12 to 17, and young people from 20-25.
EAJC General Council member, President of the Mitzvah Association of Jewish Organizations, Alexander Baron opened the seminar and then held a number of lessons with young volunteers from the community. The lessons were on the methodology of work in the project, as well as including discussions about plans for the future.
The coordinator of the project, Alexander Lvovich Abramovich, spoke on details of celebrating the Shabbat, commented on the Torah chapter of the week, and held a Shabbat ceremony, which actively involved all the participants of the seminar.
The seminar included lectures both for the core of the group and for a wider group of listeners on the epoch of Hellenistic Judaism and the personality of Alexander Makedonsky, on the Rosh-ha-Shana holiday, its laws and customs, and a detailed talk about the Book of Yonah.
At the end of the seminar, the participants discussed questions on the “From the Depth of the Ages” competition, to be held soon, with the project coordinator.
