                  19.12.2012

On December 10, the New York Park Avenue synagogue hosted a reception dedicated to the 25th anniversary of the March on Washington – the high point of the campaign for the right of Soviet Jews to immigrate, which took place in the USA and other countries. On December 6, 1987, approximately 250 thousand people rallied at the National Mall under the slogan “Let my people go!” This rally influenced Ronald Reagan's making of the “Jewish question” into one of the central negotiation points with Central Committee Secretary General of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union Mikhail Gorbachev, and soon the Red Pharaoh would release the people of Abraham from their captivity.

The reception that took place in New York on December 10th was titled “Freedom Sunday.” It was organized by the American Jewish Committee (AJC), which had several decades before been one of the initiators of the public pressure on the Soviet Union. Many of the activists of that campaign took part in the reception, including AJC Executive Director David Harris, representatives of Jewish communities and organizations, both North American and post-Soviet, as well as representatives of the diplomatic corps of Israel, Azerbaijan, Uzbekistan, Moldova, and Ukraine. An hour before the beginning of the reception, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Azerbaijan to the USA Elin Suleimanov decorated David Harris with the Dustlug ('Friendship') Medal. The decoration was timed to the occasion of the 25th anniversary and took place in the presence of Permanent Representative of Azerbaijan in the UN Agshin Mehdiyev and Ambassador-at-large of the Azerbaijan Ministry of Internal Affairs to the UN Yashar Aliyev.

The delegation of the Euro-Asian Jewish Congress (EAJC) and Vaad Ukraine was headed by EAJC General Council Chairman, VAAD leader Josed Zisels. Over the course of the evening, Zisels was awarded by the organizators for his contribution to the fight for Jewish immigration and his achievements in public work. The AJC also awarded David Harris, David Storobin, Igor Baranov, and Sam Kliger.

The AJC is a long-standing strategic partner of the EAJC, bound both by an association agreement and a warm and friendly partnership.
