Support for Bukharan Jews of Uzbekistan Discussed in New York
19.12.2012 On December 13, Euro-Asian Jewish Congress (EAJC) representatives, World Congress of Bukharan Jews, and the Congress of Bukharan Jews of the United States and Canada held negotiations in New York. The negotiations involved support for the Bukharan Jewish community in Uzbekistan in organizing and maintaining a respectable level of religious life. Among those who participated in the meeting were EAJC General Council member Josef Zisels, Coordinator of the Congress of Bukharan Jews of the United States and Canada Raphael Nektalov, President of the Congress of Bukharan Jews of the United States and Canada Boris Kandov, Congress of Bukharan Jews of the United States and Canada council member Tavriz Aronova, and members of the Directors' Council of the World Congress of Bukharan Jews, Rabbis Zalman Zvulunov and Yitzhak Volovik.
In particular, an order of 5 tons of matzot for the Pesach celebration of 2013 was decided to be placed in Kyiv. Kosher drinks for the celebration were decided to be bought in Israel. The Euro-Asian Jewish Congress and the World Congress of Bukharan Jews made a preliminary agreement to equally finance this project.
The EAJC also took on an obligation of financing 50% of the work of one, and, in the long term, two rabbis in Uzbekistan.
Participants of the meeting also discussed the possibility of a joint visit to Uzbekistan in the second half of 2013. The delega
tions would be headed by the presidents of the organizations – Levi Levayev, Vadim Shulman, and Boris Kandov.
