Presentation of Book on Jews in Mocow
21.01.2013 On January 20th, the Moscow Jewish Cultural Center on Bolshaya Nikitskaya street held a presentation of the book “Jews in Moscow: From the End of the XV Century to the Early XX Century” by Ephim Ulitsky and Dmitry Feldman. Euro-Asian Jewish Congress Secretary General Michael Chlenov spoke at the presentation.
The book bases itself on little-known or published for the first time sources from archives, museums, libraries, and private collections. Much attention has been given to the beginnings of the Moscow Jewish community, its spiritual leaders and philanthropists. The illustrations show many artifacts from the described period.
The book had been published with the aid of the Moscow Jewish Religious Community and the support of the President of the Russian Lawyers Guild Gasan Mirzoyev.
Among those who spoke at the presentation were Head Rabbi of Russia Adolph Shayevich, historian Oleg Budnitsky, and ethnologist Mark Kupovetsky. In his speech, Michael Chlenov noted the selfless efforts of the authors and noted that the book breaks the stereotype of Jews and Russians living together “over a mere 200 years” by its very title.
