Peyretz Goldmacher Necrologue
29.01.2013 The Euro-Asian Jewish Congress is deeply saddened by the passing of Peyretz Goldmacher, a prominent historian and one of the leaders of the Russian-speaking Jewish community of the USA. Peyretz Goldmacher, who passed away on January 27, was our older comrade, wise friend, and great colleague. He was 92.
Peyretz Goldmacher was the founder and former president of the Association of Engineers and Scientists - New Americans (AES), and became one of the informal leaders of Russian Jewish community life in New York during the 1990s. His efforts helped build bridges between “fourth wave” immigrants and the existing structures of the American Jewish establishment.
Peyretz Goldmacher played a key role in the creation of a number of leading organizations of the Russian-speaking Jewish community of New York, including the Council of Jewish Organizations of Immigrants from the Former Soviet Union (CJOI), which had later been transformed into the Council of Jewish Emigre Community Organizations (COJECO). He organized a program for the preparation of leaders and active members for the Russian-speaking Jewish community of the USA together with the American Jewish Committee (AJC).
In the last years of his life, even despite his advanced age, Peyretz Goldmacher continued to actively participate in Jewish community life, and was readying a book on the history of the Jewish Renaissance in the Soviet Union for publication.
The EAJC presents its deepest and most sincere condolences to the family and friends of the deceased.
Baruch dayan ha-emeth.
