On April 6-7 of 1903, a terrible pogrom had taken place in Chisinau by connivance of the state, accompanied by arson, robbery and mass murder of Jews. The Jews, who had not received any support from neither the government nor the police, had defended themselves fiercely and provoked even more aggression. The resulting bloodbath took the lives of 50 people, and over 600 other residents of the city received wounds and grievous bodily harm. Almost a third of the houses of the city were damaged or destroyed.

The Chisinau program had an enormous resonance in Europe, America and Russia. A special Committee had been organized to help the Jews who were harmed as a result of the tragedy.
On April 11, memorial events had taken place in Chisinau, the most important of which was a community rally.

EAJC General Council Chairman Josef Zisels spoke at the commemorative evening dedicated to 110th anniversary of the Chisinau pogrom; his speech included a greeting from the Euro-Asian Jewish Congress (EAJC) President and ruminations on the lessons that the tragedy presented.

A photo exhibition of the photographic materials and documents connected to the pogrom had been organized near the Stefan III of Moldavia memorial in the center of the Moldavian capital from April 5 to April 12.
