Euro-Asian Jewish Congress with deep grief took the sad news of the death of Edgar Bronfman, a prominent Jewish leader, our good friend, who died in New York at age 84.
Edgar Bronfman served as President of the World Jewish Congress for about 30 years. The time of his leadership coincided with the revival of public and communal Jewish life in the former USSR. We, who participated in the Independent Jewish movement, know better than anyone how much spiritual energy and organizational enthusiasm gave Edgar to ensure that the former Soviet Jews — "Jews of Silence" — have become an organic and integral part of the international Jewish community.
Tangible result of his directing activity was the restoration of historical justice to the victims of the Holocaust and their heirs. His uncompromising stance towards anti-Semitism and efforts to pretext delegitimizing the Jewish state has defined the global agenda of world Jewry on late XX - early XXI centuries.
Advocate the Jewish stance on many major issues of our time, Edgar Bronfman found understanding among national leaders, politicians and public figures. He worked hard for the establishment of interfaith dialogue in the global format.
Edgar Bronfman earned the gratitude of millions of Jews in those generosity and selflessness with which he served Jewish people. Thanks Edgar — a genuine world leader of the Jewish Diaspora, several generations of Jews was able to reunite with the Promised Land, and not fear for their commitment to the Jewish tradition.
We are proud of our friendship with Edgar and mourn with his family and family and loved ones, many friends and followers. We pray to the Almighty to send them consolation.
We believe that the blessed memory of Edgar Bronfman will remain forever in the history of Jewish people.
