A youth seminar on Jewish identity took place in Almaty (Kazakhstan). The seminar was organized under the aegist of the “Mitzvah” Association of Jewish Organizations of Kazakhstan.

The “Mitzvah” President, Euro-Asian Jewish Congress Presidium member Alexander Baron invited such important EAJC figures as EAJC Secretary General, Professor Michael Chlenov, EAJC General Council Chairman Josef Zisels, and the EAJC PR Department Head Roman Spector to speak at the seminar.

The Russian and Ukrainian guests spoke about the history and contemporary state of the Jewish identity, and illustrated the many approaches to evaluating this phenomenon with examples from different Jewish communities. The presentations provoked a lively discussion among the participants.

In his summary of the event, EAJC Secretary General Michael Chlenov stressed the importance of the questions that were raised and noted that “the fact that youth are so interested in such current questions as Jewish self-awareness means that the Jewish community of Kazakhstan is a mature community and that it has good prospects for further development.”
