The Director General of the Euro-Asian Jewish Congress (EAJC) Haim Ben-Yaakov has visited the Jewish community of Baku. Ben-Yaakov held meetings with EAJC General Council members: the Chairman of the Religious Jewish Community of European Jews of Baku Gennadiy Zelmanovich and the Chairman of the Chesed Gershon Trustee Board Matvey Elizarov. The EAJC Director General visited the communities of Mountain Jews and Georgian Jews, as well as a community house, where he met the leaders and participants of Jewish community programs. A fruitful discussion was held with the rabbi of the Ashkenazi community, Schneor Segal.

As Haim Ben-Yaakov noted, “The incredible atmosphere of Baku, remarked upon by all who have ever visited this city, could also be felt during the visit to the hospitable and tightly-knit Jewish community of Baku. We celebrated the Sabbath and Shavuot together with the Jews of Baku - Mountain Jews, Ashkenazi Jews, Georgian Jews. I saw a real, living community that helps the eldely and those in need, carefully keeps Jewish traditions and passes them on to children, and greets guests with traditional Caucasus-style hospitality.”
